Background of the Study
Political godfathers, influential figures who exert significant control over local electoral processes, have long been a subject of intense scrutiny in Nigerian politics. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, the presence of political godfathers often determines the outcomes of local elections, shaping candidate selection and influencing voter behavior (Ede, 2023). These influential individuals use patronage networks, financial resources, and personal charisma to secure electoral victories for their preferred candidates, often at the expense of merit-based competition (Ibrahim, 2024). The phenomenon contributes to a culture of political dependency, where local governance is overshadowed by the interests of a few powerful actors rather than being driven by the broader electorate’s aspirations (Afolabi, 2025). This study examines the mechanisms through which political godfathers exert their influence in Ikom, investigating the implications for electoral fairness, democratic accountability, and policy outcomes. By analyzing electoral data, conducting interviews with stakeholders, and reviewing case studies, the research seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the role of political godfathers in local elections and to propose recommendations for mitigating their undue influence.

Statement of the Problem
In Ikom Local Government Area, the influence of political godfathers has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of local elections. Their involvement in candidate selection and campaign financing often undermines fair electoral competition and leads to the entrenchment of patronage systems (Ede, 2023). This influence not only distorts the democratic process but also diminishes the accountability of elected officials, as they are beholden to powerful political benefactors rather than to their constituents (Ibrahim, 2024). The study aims to critically examine the extent of political godfathers’ involvement in local elections and to identify strategies to reduce their undue influence, thereby promoting a more transparent and democratic electoral process (Afolabi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the extent of political godfathers’ influence on local elections in Ikom.

  2. To examine the mechanisms through which godfathers shape electoral outcomes.

  3. To propose strategies to curtail their undue influence.

Research Questions:

  1. How do political godfathers influence candidate selection and electoral outcomes in Ikom?

  2. What are the key mechanisms used by godfathers to exert control over local elections?

  3. What measures can be implemented to reduce the influence of political godfathers?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Political godfathers have a significant impact on electoral outcomes.

  2. H2: Their influence undermines the principles of democratic competition.

  3. H3: Implementing stricter electoral regulations reduces their impact.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically examines the pervasive influence of political godfathers on local elections in Ikom. The research findings will provide insights for electoral reform and contribute to efforts aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and fair competition in local governance. By addressing the challenges posed by patronage politics, the study supports the development of more democratic and citizen-focused electoral processes (Ede, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the influence of political godfathers on local elections within Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, focusing solely on local electoral dynamics.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Political Godfathers: Influential political figures who use patronage to control electoral outcomes.

  2. Electoral Integrity: The fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

  3. Patronage Networks: Systems of support based on personal loyalty and reciprocal benefits.
